Maefair Health Care Center Earns 5-Star CMS Rating

Maefair Health Care Center Earns 5-Star CMS Rating

TRUMBULL, C.T. — Maefair Health Care Center in Trumbull is now a 5-star nursing home.

The center increased its Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) Rating in July. CMS combines results from three areas including Health Inspections, Staffing, and Quality Measures, to get a combined star rating of skilled nursing facilities. The CMS Star Rating is based on a one through five rating scale. According to CMS, a 3-star rating is considered an average rating for a skilled nursing facility.

Administrator Rita Pitter said her immediate reaction to the news was to run to her Director of Nursing Services and other key managers, where they shared the excitement.

“We were just elated that, based on our hard work, that we actually achieved it and it’s something we’ve been working very hard in achieving for the past year,” she said. “It’s a sense of pride that [the staff] have accomplished something.”

Regional Director of Operations for Connecticut, Chris McKinney, said “We are so proud of Maefair’s achievement of quality care initiatives for all of our residents in the facility. This is not an easy accomplishment but from the dedicated teams members of Maefair, we can congratulate you on this outstanding accomplishment.”

Pitter explains how they’ve been working to increase quality measures and the state surveys. She said staff “hoorayed” when informed of the new rating.

Director of Nursing Services Marjorie Jean Paul Rene said she is “extremely excited” to see the facility moving forward.

The Maefair team celebrates their 5-star achievement

“I want to congratulate the entire Maefair team for their unbelievable performance and wonderful achievement,” she said.

The administrator explains it’s about investing time in your residents and always improving staff education and interaction with residents.

“We take pride in taking care of our residents,” Pitter said. “It’s not about being the administrator. It’s about being part of a team. None of this would be possible without every department.”

Jenny Dos Santos in admissions at the center said, “To become a five-star facility is an affirmation of all the hard work that our staff members put into their work. Maefair has some of the most dedicated staff members that strive every day to provide the best care possible. From preparing meals, to running activities, providing care, or helping recovery from injuries, our staff goes above and beyond in everything they do.”

While the recognition is great, she notes the staff and residents always knew Maefair was “full of stars.”

The center celebrated their achievement on August 10th with a speech from Pitter, thanking her staff, along with cake for the whole team and a proclamation from Trumbull First Selectman Vicki Tesoro, proclaiming August 10th as Maefair Health Care Day.

Maefair joined three other centers in Connecticut to increase their CMS ratings in July. Cherry Brook Health Care Center in Canton and Wadsworth Glen Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Middletown both increased to three stars. Meanwhile, The Summit At Plantsville is now a 4-star facility.
